Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incense: When Should You Use Each?

A friendship milestone, a Stardust session or a walk around the park calls for a different plan. Here is how to time your items, avoid waste and tell regular Incense from Daily Adventure Incense.

You have a few Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incense sitting in your bag. Should you switch them all on before heading out? Start with what you actually plan to do: earn XP, collect Stardust or catch Pokémon on a walk. The useful item depends on the session.

Pick an item for the session you have planned

Your planItem to considerUsual effect and duration
Earn XP in a concentrated sessionLucky EggDouble XP, normally 30 minutes
Collect StardustStar Piece50% more Stardust, normally 30 minutes
Find Pokémon while walkingRegular IncenseAttracts wild Pokémon, normally 60 minutes

These are the standard timings. Check the in-game Today View and the relevant event announcement before using anything; an event's longer timer is not a permanent rule.

Lucky Eggs: have the XP lined up first

A friendship milestone or saved research XP gives you a reason to plan a Lucky Egg. A stretch of uninterrupted catching can work too. Have the session ready before starting the timer, rather than spending the first few minutes clearing storage or deciding where to go.

Arrange friendship milestones with your friends and follow the game's prompts for receiving XP and using an Egg. Do not assume an XP reward that has already settled can be doubled afterwards.

The item is separate from the Pokémon Eggs you put in an Incubator. For an XP boost, look for the Lucky Egg in your item bag.

Star Pieces: make it a Stardust session

Consider a Star Piece when you have time for sustained catching or an event with a Stardust reward you want to work toward. Check which resource the session will actually earn. If all you are doing is collecting XP rewards, there is no need to use a Star Piece automatically.

For an eligible reward worth 1,000 Stardust before the item boost, a 50% increase makes it 1,500, not 2,000. That is a calculation example, not a promise about the amount from each catch. Check any additional event bonuses separately.

Sort out Poké Balls and Pokémon storage before leaving home. Having to stop and clear space is an avoidable interruption.

Incense: start when you are ready to walk and catch

Regular Incense suits a route where you can keep an eye on the map and stop safely to catch. More encounter opportunities still require you to throw Poké Balls; they do not guarantee a particular species or a shiny.

If you only have a few minutes before a meeting, a meal or a journey, save it for a session you can give some attention.

Daily Adventure Incense is different. Its normal window is 15 minutes and it requires real-world movement to attract Pokémon. Do not apply regular Incense's hour-long timer to it. You also cannot have more than one type of Incense active at once, so check your current effect first.

Should you use all three together?

A catching walk may support all three goals. Use the different effects in the same session when each has a purpose, rather than trying to fill the screen with timers.

Their timers do not match: regular Incense normally covers an hour, while a Lucky Egg and Star Piece normally cover half an hour each. Decide whether to continue based on your remaining plans, not on whether another item's icon is still visible.

Extra copies of the same boost extend its time rather than turning a Lucky Egg into quadruple XP or repeatedly multiplying a Star Piece bonus. Read the current in-game timing before committing more items.

Check your bag before buying a bundle

Count the items you expect to use soon. A box full of bonus Lucky Eggs is not automatically good value if raid passes are what you actually need.

Try a session with your existing stock first. If you need more coins, see our Pokémon GO PokéCoins page and account checks and order verification guide. For raid items, read the Remote Raid Pass and Premium Battle Pass comparison.
