Remote Raid Pass vs. Premium Battle Pass: What's the Difference and How to Use Them

I had a stash of Premium passes and kept trying to accept remote invites — that is how I learned these two passes are not interchangeable. Here is what each one is for, when I use it, and what to check before buying a bundle.

I still remember my first week back: I had a pile of Premium Battle Passes in my bag, saw a friend's remote invite, tapped it, and nothing happened. That was the moment I learned that these two passes both look like "passes for raids" but are not interchangeable.

If you have ever mixed them up, here is how I think about them: what each one is for, when I use it, and what I check before buying a bundle.

The one-sentence difference

  • Remote Raid Pass: join eligible raids without being at the gym.
  • Premium Battle Pass: raid in person, or use it on the premium track of GO Battle League.

If that is too short, the next two sections break it down.

Remote Raid Pass: for when you cannot be there

The Remote Raid Pass solves distance. When a friend invites you, or a raid appears on the nearby list or map that you can join remotely, this pass lets you in without walking to the gym.

The cases where I use it most:

  • I am at work or at home, and a friend in another city finds a legendary raid worth doing;
  • the weather is bad and I really do not want to go out;
  • during an event, the venue is too far but I still want to join;
  • a friend needs one more trainer and pulls me in at short notice.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Not every raid can be joined remotely. Shadow Raids and similar in-person battles do not accept a Remote Raid Pass.
  • Remote passes usually cost more than the passes you use on site, so save them for raids you genuinely cannot attend.
  • There is a daily limit on remote raids; check the in-game prompt for the current number.

Premium Battle Pass: for in-person raids and GO Battle League

Premium passes are more of an on-site item. If you are near the gym and want to raid several times in a row, this is the pass to use; it also works on the premium reward track of GO Battle League.

My own use:

  • weekends with friends at a busy gym, raiding back to back;
  • event days such as Community Day, GO Fest or Wild Area — stock up and raid one after another;
  • the end of a GO Battle League season, when I am pushing rank.

The flip side: a Premium Battle Pass cannot be used to accept a remote invite. That is the part people get wrong most often.

Do not forget the third one: the regular Raid Pass

Besides those two, there is the regular Raid Pass you can get from a gym once a day (the "green pass"). It is free, works only in person, and cannot be used remotely.

So my order of use is usually:

  1. If I can be there, use the free daily pass first;
  2. when it is gone, continue with Premium passes;
  3. only when I really cannot attend do I use a Remote Raid Pass.

That keeps remote passes from running out, since they are more expensive and better saved for the times I am not on site.

How to get the most out of them

From my own experience, the priority looks like this:

Everyday: use the free daily pass first; do not let it sit in the bag.

Raids I can attend in person: green pass and Premium first, keep Remote for later.

Raids I cannot attend, or a friend's invite: use a Remote Raid Pass, and pick raids worth it — legendaries, event exclusives, or good IVs.

Big event days: prepare Premium passes and raid on site; keep Remote passes for venues you cannot reach or for friends who need help at short notice.

GO Battle League pushes: use Premium passes on the premium track, and do not mix that up with raid planning.

Before you buy

Bundles often mix the two types. Check how many of each you get, not just the total.

My habit: think about whether the next month has in-person events. If you raid outdoors most weekends, stock more Premium passes; if friends mostly pull you into remote raids, that is when Remote passes are worth buying.

Passes also come from research and event rewards, not only from the shop. Check what you already have before paying.

If you need PokéCoins, see the Pokémon GO PokéCoin product page, and read the PokéCoin purchase guide before ordering.

That is how I use them. If you remember one line: remote when you cannot be there, Premium when you are on site, and do not waste the free daily pass. Prices, daily limits and event rules change, so check the in-game text before you use one.
