Lucky Egg, Star Piece or Incense: When Is It Actually Worth Using? A Veteran's Notes
Before writing this I checked my own bag: items I keep saving for 'a future event' tend to expire. Here is how I personally use Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incense — weekends when parks are busy, monthly Community Day, GO Fest, and November's Wild Area event.

Before writing this I checked my own bag: a dozen Lucky Eggs left, only three Star Pieces, and Incense I keep forgetting to use. I suspect many players are the same — we get an item, tell ourselves "I'll save it for a future event", and let it expire.
So here is how I personally use Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incense, and when it is not worth burning one.
What each one actually does
- Lucky Egg: double XP for 30 minutes.
- Star Piece: 50% more Stardust for 30 minutes.
- Incense: attracts wild Pokémon for 60 minutes. (The daily Adventure Incense is different — about 15 minutes, and you have to move.)
Durations are the usual rules; events can change them, so glance at the Today tab before you start.
Lucky Egg: save it for the half hour when XP is dense
My rule: only pop one when I know I can catch or raid for the whole half hour, or when I am about to level up a friendship.
Community Day is the classic case. The park is busy, spawns are fast, and half an hour is easily dozens of catches; if you and a friend coordinate friendship levels, one egg can cover two players' worth of XP.
GO Fest and November's Wild Area event are similar — XP is concentrated, so a Lucky Egg opened before the session is worth far more than one opened on a quiet evening. If you are just logging in to tidy your bag, an egg is only a countdown running out.
One small note: a Lucky Egg is not an egg for the incubator. It is the item that boosts XP — don't go looking in the wrong part of your bag.
Star Piece: watch the Stardust, not the XP
A Star Piece only affects Stardust. I save it for half hours when I will be catching continuously: Community Day, a busy park at the weekend, or an event with a clear Stardust bonus.
A quick example: a 1,000 Stardust base becomes 1,500 with a Star Piece, not 2,000. It is not a universal multiplier — what matters is whether you are actually earning Stardust during those 30 minutes.
If today is mostly about XP and levelling, leave the Star Piece in the bag; there is no need to burn it alongside a Lucky Egg.
Incense: only worth it when you are actually walking
Incense gives you encounter chances, not guaranteed catches. It suits a session where you have a route planned and can keep an eye on the map.
My own habit: pick a busy park or shopping street at the weekend, walk and put Incense on; during Community Day, GO Fest or Wild Area events the spawn density is higher, so Incense pays off the most.
If you are sitting at a restaurant, on a bus, or about to join a meeting, skip it — 60 minutes sounds long, but it goes quickly.
Also keep the two types separate: regular Incense lasts 60 minutes, Daily Adventure Incense about 15 and requires real movement. Only one can be active at a time.
When I use them
In my experience the priority is roughly:
1. Every weekend, when there are people around
Parks, shopping streets and busy gyms have more players and more spawns. Put Incense on while walking and add a Lucky Egg and Star Piece — half an hour to an hour is ideal.
2. Monthly Community Day
A three-hour focused event is when these items are most worth it. I usually open the Lucky Egg and Star Piece ten minutes before it starts and keep Incense on throughout.
3. GO Fest and other big events
They run for days, with dense XP, Stardust and encounters. Prepare items in advance instead of remembering them after the event ends.
4. November's Wild Area event
This kind of limited event is ideal for focused catching and raiding. Open a Lucky Egg before a raid, add a Star Piece while catching, and don't forget Incense if you are outdoors.
Can you use all three together?
Yes — as long as you are genuinely catching or raiding. The durations differ: Incense 60 minutes, Lucky Egg and Star Piece 30 each. It is normal for the egg and piece to expire while Incense is still running; add another if needed.
Using the same item twice only extends the duration; it does not double the bonus. So there is no hidden penalty for "using too many".
A short checklist before heading out
- Enough Poké Balls and Great Balls
- Free space in Pokémon storage
- Phone battery and a power bank
- Check the event hours so you don't miss the bonus
If you need to restock
If you are like me and only notice you are short of items right before an event, check the store's PokéCoin page beforehand and top up Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incense as needed.
For PokéCoins, see the Pokémon GO PokéCoin product page, and read the order checklist before ordering.
Durations and effects above are the usual rules; if an event changes them, follow the in-game announcement.
